○

Be prepared for the emergency and changes in weather. Mountain weather changes quickly and it can snow any months of the year.

○

There was a very small phreatic eruption in Owakudani in 2015.
Hiking trails lead to Owakudani is still closed because of the volcanic gas.

Check the real-time volcanic gas information below.

○

Never remove or possess wild flowers and natural resources.

Never approach and/or feed wildlife. Animals that become dependent on human food will become aggressive toward people and cause a problem between people and animals.

○

Taking shortcuts causes trail erosion and is dangerous to slip off.

○

Our point is that it is important to extend others common courtesy and friendliness on the trails that you are both out there to enjoy.

○

If hiking in a group, do not take up the whole width of that trail, allow others to pass.

○

It is recommended to use rubber ends on your hiking staffs and trekking pole to reduce the impact on the trail.

○

Watch for falling rock, fallen rock, rock on the trails not to slip, do not drop rock.

○

Pack out all garbage including diapers and food waste.

○

Never camping and fire out of designated area.

○

Turn your cell phone, radio and speaker down. Be respectful of both nature and the other hikers. Many wild life, especially birds, rely on natural sounds for communication purposes, and disrupting those sounds can hurt their life.

○

If you are planning to take out your dog on a trail, please respect that dogs can stress wildlife. Keep your dog under control and they must be on a leash at all times.
Furthermore, sarcoptic mange, or scabies is one of the itchiest conditions that affect your dogs passing from raccoon dog, the mites burrow into the superficial skin and can drive dogs crazy with itchiness.

○

Rare plants are sometimes dug up and removed from the national park to the market.
Anyone with information about the theft should call to 110(police) or +81-460-84-8727 (Hakone office of Ministry of the Environment).
Hopefully the plants will still be there for the future generations.

○

Never release the larva of fireflies. Never plant non-native species even though it is coming from your kindness.
One non-native species or pet could threaten hundreds of other species.
The few that are able to adapt to the new environment may disrupt the ecological balance of natural habitat.
